Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting
Overview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants and children in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
This unit applies to a range of workers in an education and care setting who must respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. In addition, this course includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school-age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.
Topics Covered
Manage an unconscious casualty, an understanding of the biology and function of the human body to provide first aid in asthma, anaphylaxis, heart attacks, bleeding control and wound care, burns, fractures, head and spinal injuries, diabetics, shock, bites and stings, choking.
A spotlight on medical emergencies that may be unique to small children
Perform CPR on infants, children and adults. Following the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on a child and Adult
Legal issues and documentation when providing first aid in an education and care setting
Upon completing this course, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment that is nationally accredited.
Our Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting course satisfies four units of competency from the Health Training Package (HLT07):
HLTAID012: Provide emergency first aid in an education and care setting
HLTAID011: Provide First Aid
HLTAID010: Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
HLTAID009: Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Childcare First Aid should be refreshed every three years.
Time Duration
Around 6 ½ hours in class
Plus, the pre-course online learning to be completed before attending allow up to 2 hours.
Assessment Blended Delivery
Theory-based multiple-choice questions completed online prior to the training day.
Practical scenarios undertaken during class.
To be deemed competent, participants must be able to perform CPR on a manikin on the ground for 2 minutes.
Students enrolled in Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting complete pre-course learning and attend a full-day course with their trainer.
Online pre-course learning consists of presentations and multiple-choice questions to prepare students for further training and assessment. The precourse education can be done in class with the trainer if organised beforehand.
When you enrol in your first aid course, you will be emailed your login automatically for the online pre-course learning, and you can start it immediately.
